Dust Mites

Dust Mites

Dust Mites

The inventor of the microscope, Anton van Leeuwenhoek, reported in 1694 that mites live in dust. Now, more than 300 years later, it is an established fact that dust mites can be found in house dust all over the world. Dust mites are not insects but are more closely related to spiders and ticks. There are two common dust mites, the American house dust mite (Dermatophagoides farinae) and the European house dust mite (D. pteronyssinus). Due to their very small size, these dust mites are not visible to the naked eye. They live in bedding, couches, carpet, stuffed toys and old clothing. Dust mites feed on the dead skin that falls off the bodies of humans and animals and on other organic material found where they live.

Though these mites live in many homes, only people who are allergic to them know they are there. Dust mites are second only to pollen in causing allergic reactions. When dust mites grow, they shed their skin. The shed skin and feces are what cause allergic reactions in people. Allergic reactions range from itchy noses and eyes to severe asthma attacks.

HABITS AND HABITATS

Dust mites do not live in air ducts in homes. Many people spend much time and money cleaning the air ducts to reduce dust mites. This is not necessary because dust mites need about 70 percent relative humidity or higher to live, and they need food. Areas where people spend much time, like a bed or a favorite plush chair, are prime sites for dust mites. The top part of mattresses containing fibrous material is a favorite place for dust mites during warm and humid times. The deeper parts of mattresses may provide protected areas for the dust mites during unfavorable conditions. Clothing is used by dust mites as a means of transportation from room to room or even from house to house.

BATTELLE EXPERTS PREDICT THE TOP TEN HEALTHY HOME TRENDS FOR 2010

Excerpts:
"(1) Breathing Easy: Indoor Air Quality - Increasingly energy efficient homes have created interiors that are a virtual soup of odors and fumes from indoor pollutants. Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors and often the quality of air is worse than what we find outdoors. Homes and commercial buildings are sealed so well that despite circulation by heating and cooling systems, odors and particulates swirl around with nowhere to go-but your lungs. Respiratory problems including asthma and allergies are on the rise and can be attributed, in part, to mold and mildew spores; outgassing from synthetic fiber used in building materials and carpets; pet hair and dander; outdoor pollens that become trapped indoors; and inadequately vented cooking and food odors. What's a gasping and wheezing homeowner to do? What you're likely to see on the market and in homes by 2010 are products for advanced air venting, air filtration and biosensors that help fight humidity, mold and other indoor pollutants."

"(8) Mite Wars: Battling Mites and Molds in Bedding, Furniture and Carpets - These buggers are hard to get rid of and increasingly are being blamed for a host of different major allergies. Mites, which look ferocious when viewed under a microscope, are tiny insects that can be found throughout the home. They particularly love warm, dark and damp fabrics that are typically found in bedrooms. Researchers today are exploring the ways to kill mites using light and to fight mold by reducing humidity. This work will be stepped up in the coming years as the government and companies declare war against mites and mold."

IVF - in vitro fertility clinic (s) air filtration system

Use in a in vitro fertilization program (lab)Allerair Air Purifier Air Cleaner Air Filtration System- Equipped with HEPA filter, Activated Charcoal / Carbon filter, Optional UV Light

Yes we have two of the Aller Air units.

We use the units in a in vitro fertilization program and need to filter out biological particular, and odors (airborne organics). We routinely test the lab for biological contaminates (bacteria) using culture techniques and particulate materials by microscopy examination. While we do not test for airborne organics per se, their effect on culture of our embryos would be readily apparent if there was a problem.

Since we started using the units we have had no problems with airborne organic interference with culture and have had no positive tests for bacterial contaminates. While we still have minor dust problems (which comes from our house air supply) they have been greatly reduced by having the freestanding filtration units in the room (I would estimate 80 - 90% reduction).

So, yes, overall we are extremely pleased with the units and have no problems recommending them to others.

Parents Ask How Air Pollution Affects Kids - Yahoo! News

Parents Ask How Air Pollution Affects Kids - Yahoo! News

By DAVID PACE, Associated Press Writer 26 minutes ago

The people who breathe the nation's most unhealthy factory air worry about more than just asthma and other respiratory problems. They also want to know if their daily dose of toxic pollution is slowing the academic and physical development of their children.

In the Ohio River Valley along the Ohio-West Virginia border, factories annually send into the air hundreds of thousands of pounds of manganese dust, a heavy metal that can harm the brain and nervous system.

Biologist Dick Wittberg, who heads the mid-Ohio Valley Health Department, has been pressing for years for a full-blown government study to determine if those releases are harming the children in his hometown of Marietta, Ohio.

Several years ago, Wittberg took part in a study that compared Marietta children with those in a similar-sized Ohio town on academic and physical tests. The Marietta kids fared significantly worse.

"We didn't do anything that in any respect proves that this is manganese that has done this, because there are other scenarios that are entirely possible," he said. "But in my opinion, it really points to some environmental problem that is causing some neurological differences, and one has to suspect manganese. Nobody knows for kids how much is too much."

Similar concerns span the country, though communities with the worst factory pollution sometimes are frustrated they don't have more research to rely on.

In the Detroit suburb of Ecorse, which has sued U.S. Steel over decades of air pollution, Mayor Larry Salisbury wants the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate how industrial toxins affect health.

"We think there have been citizens who had an early death because of health issues related to that steel plant," Salisbury said. "It would be great if the
CDC would study certain towns to make the case."

"Sometimes I think the government doesn't want to know the answers," he said. "Once they do, they have a certain liability to enforce."

U.S. Steel spokesman John Armstrong said his company took over the Ecorse plant in 2003 from bankrupt National Steel and has spent millions cleaning up problems. "We take great pride in our environmental stewardship and are addressing these issues as quickly as possible," he said.

An Associated Press analysis of federal pollution, health and Census data found that more than 30 neighborhoods around the Great Steel Works plant in Ecorse rank among the worst 5 percent nationally for potential health risks from industrial air pollution.

AP used health risk scores calculated by the
Environmental Protection Agency. The measures can be used to compare the chronic health risk from industrial air pollution from one part of the country to another.

The study found that eight states ? Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri ? account for almost half the total health risk nationally from factory air. Nearly one-tenth of the total risk is concentrated in Ohio, especially along the heavily industrialized Ohio River corridor.

Farther east, Camden, N.J., is home to more than 100 contaminated industrial sites and seven minority neighborhoods that rank among the top 1 percent in the nation for the long-term health risk posed by factory pollution.

Dr. Robert Pedowitz said his Camden practice sees about 25 patients a day for asthma or allergy complaints, more than any other private practice in New Jersey. One of the main triggers, he said, is air pollution.

"It severely affects the quality of life," Pedowitz said. "It makes people tired, affects their ability to function."

In the Ohio River Valley where Wittberg lives, nine neighborhoods in and around Marietta and Wood County, W.Va., rank among the worst 100 nationally for health risks from factory emissions.

There are more than 20 industrial plants along or near the Ohio River. Those plants regularly spew tens of thousands of pounds of manganese, chromium, sulfuric acid, and formaldehyde.

"It's a toxic soup of contaminants because of all the different facilities in the area," said Michelle Colledge, an environmental health scientist with the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

The river corridor also is a major contributor to factory air pollution in West Virginia, which has the highest health risk per person of any state. Indiana ranks second in per capita health risk, followed by Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa and Alabama.

Residents around Marietta, with the help of Sen. Mike DeWine (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, petitioned the government several years ago to study the health impact of the region's air.

Tina Trombley, president of Recover, a local environmental group, said residents want to find out for sure if the high incidence of asthma and several types of cancer are the result of air pollution.

"We need to do a full-fledged study and we're hoping that's what they will be able to do for us," she said.

The initial study found arsenic and manganese in the air consistently exceeded levels that scientists believe harm health. Colledge said there wasn't enough information to determine if pollution actually was a health hazard. Further monitoring at specific sites was ordered.

The initial federal study focused on an industrial complex south of Marietta that includes four major facilities. The largest, the Eramet Marietta metal refinery, released more than 550,000 pounds of manganese compounds in 2000, and more than 25,000 pounds of chromium compounds. Another facility, Eveready Battery, releases more than 16,000 pounds of manganese compounds a year.

Jeff McKinney, environmental manager at Eramet, said neither the study nor any other data suggest that "emissions from area industry have adversely impacted the health of residents. Moreover, we have not seen manganese exposure-related neurological effects in our long term employees."

Colledge and Wittberg said the area offers an unusual opportunity to study the impact of manganese dust on humans, particularly children.

Wittberg has been campaigning for such a study since the late 1990s, when he teamed with an EPA researcher and a University of Quebec scientist to measure differences between children in Marietta and Athens, a similar-sized Ohio town 45 miles away.

They gave a battery of 13 tests to fourth-graders in both cities, who had been matched for age, sex and parental education. The tests measured such things as educational proficiency, balance, visual contrast sensitivity and short-term memory.

"The Marietta kids did worse on almost everything," Wittberg said.

The implications are potentially far-reaching if the children's IQ scores turn out to be 10 to 15 points lower, he said.

"Brilliant kids are now simply smart; smart kids are average and average kids are not average any more," Wittberg said. "I believe it is the whole lives of the kids that are affected. I don't think that the damage can be undone."

Nature of tobacco smoke

Nature Of Tobacco Smoke

  • air purifier, air cleaner, air scrubberTobacco smoke consists of nicotine, tars, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and a substantial number of chemicals and many other irritants. Tars adhere to walls, furniture, carpets, clothing and other articles having large surfaces. After most of the vapor and smoke in the air has been removed by the impregnated carbon media (found in Allerair air cleaner, air purifier, air scrubber ), the walls and other surfaces may retain a film of liquid tar, much of which slowly evaporates back into the air.
  • Carbon media is the most adsorbent material known to man, and is the adsorbent of choice by the military, industry, healthcare institutions, and of environmental organizations. Allerair air cleaner, air purifier, air scrubber have models with 7 pounds and up to a 160 pounds of activated carbon media. Google- more on activated carbon , activated charcoal
  • Allerair D/S and DX/S series with the double activated carbon media together with a matching smoke specific pre-filter (Tar pre-filter), does not hide or mask the odors, chemicals and gases as some other systems do. Allerair units do not use Ozone, which itself has been labeled a pollutant. According to the American Lung Association and Health Canada, it is dangerous to one's health when you breathe in additional ozone.

California Asthma Partners

California Asthma Partners

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects the airways. People with asthma have airways that are inflamed. Inflamed airways are very sensitive, so they tend to react strongly to things called "triggers." Triggers are either allergy-causing substances, such as dust mites, mold, and pollen; or irritants, such as cigarette smoke and fumes from paint and cleaning fluid. When the airways react to a trigger, they become narrower due to swelling and squeezing of the airways by the small muscles around them. This results in less air getting through to the lungs and less air getting out. Symptoms of asthma include acute episodes of:

* Coughing
* Wheezing (a whistling or squeaky sound during breathing)
* Chest tightness
* Shortness of breath

Symptoms can vary in severity; they can be mild or moderate and affect activity levels, or they can be severe and life threatening.

Asthma triggers and symptoms vary from one person to another. Some people have asthma symptoms only occasionally, while others have symptoms almost all the time. Asthma can be controlled with proper medical diagnosis and management. Although it cannot be cured, with proper control of asthma, people should have minimal or no asthma symptoms.

LONDON - Driving badly? Then ditch the pastry and reach for the mints.

Different odors affect the way motorists drive, with fast-food scents likely to increase road rage potential and other smells ? like peppermint ? deemed to improve concentration, the British RAC Foundation motoring organization said Friday.

?More than any other sense, the sense of smell circumnavigates the logical part of the brain,? the RAC Foundation?s consultant psychologist, Conrad King, said. [ Rest of article ]

Los Angeles Named Nation's Smog Capital - Yahoo! News

Los Angeles Named Nation's Smog Capital - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES - The greater Los Angeles region surpassed Houston and the San Joaquin Valley as the nation's smog capital, in part because of a change in method of ranking, federal officials said.

Air quality in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties exceeded the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency's smog standard on 84 days this year, the agency said. The EPA considers the totals to be final numbers for 2005 because the smog season runs from May through September.

"It's a tough job cleaning up the ozone at this point because there are not a lot of easy emissions to target," said Joe Cassmassi, planning and rules manager for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the region's main smog-fighting agency. Ozone is one of the components of smog.

Houston and the San Joaquin Valley, which in recent years rivaled or surpassed Los Angeles as the country's smoggiest areas, ranked lower this year.

But Los Angeles' rank comes with an asterisk.

The EPA this year switched from measuring smog over a one-hour period to measuring it over an eight-hour span. Under the old system, Houston would have edged out Los Angeles for the top spot by violating the standard on 33 days compared with 30 days.

Although it led the nation in smoggy days, the Los Angeles region's air is considerably cleaner than it used to be.

The air violated federal standards on 90 days in 2004 and 120 days in 2003. In 1976, it exceeded federal standards for more than half the year.

Los Angeles could lose federal transportation funding if the area continues to violate the smog standard by 2021.

How to Clean Out a Fireplace and Chimney - eHow.com

A clean fireplace and chimney is your best defense against a dangerous chimney fire.

Steps:
1. Buy a set of chimney rods and brushes at the hardware store.

2. Change into old clothes and don safety goggles and a dust mask. Lay out a clean tarp in front of the fireplace. Cover the fireplace opening with a plastic tarp held on with duct tape.

3. Open the fireplace's damper. This is the metal door up inside the fireplace, located just above the firebox; it prevents cold air from entering your home when you don't have a fire burning.

4. Carefully climb up on your roof, taking the rods and brushes with you.

5. Remove the chimney cap - sometimes called a spark arrestor - and check it for weather damage. The purpose of the chimney cap is to keep sparks from escaping your chimney. It also serves to keep out rain, small animals and debris.

6. Assemble the chimney rods and brushes according to the equipment manufacturer's directions.

7. Run the brush down the chimney, using a short up-and-down plunging motion. Some brushes are designed to twist as well.

8. Go back inside the house and use a short chimney brush to clean the flue, which is the pipe that runs between the fireplace and the chimney.

9. Use a vacuum cleaner or small broom and dustpan to remove the cold ashes and creosote from the fireplace and the damper.

10. Brush the floor and walls of the fireplace with a stiff, dry scrub brush.

11. Use the brush to clean the creosote built up behind the damper.

12. Reach through the damper with a vacuum hose and vacuum the creosote out of the 'smoke shelf,' a cavity behind the fireplace.

13. Vacuum up all of the dust and debris.

Tips:
Many fire departments recommend a yearly chimney inspection.

Consider hiring a chimney service to inspect your chimney and fireplace for possible dangers and to clean them out. This should cost less than $100.

Warnings:
Don't use water to clean the fire brick or cement blocks. It could affect heat retention.

DOP Testing

Originally intended for the production testing of Absolute (HEPA) filters, this test - generally referred to as a DOP (Di-Octyl Phthalate) test, introduces an exceedingly dense cloud of sub-micronic particulate into the dirty side of the filter under test.

(Because of concern that Di-Octyl Phthalate may have carcinogenic properties, it has been replaced by an alternative product, although the abbreviated name has been retained - now signifying Dispersed Oil Particulate.)

The clean side is then viewed against a (preferably) dark background, where the slightest seepage of smoke can be clearly observed, so that even the most minute leakage can be dealt with.

Allerair air cleaners, air purifiers, and air scrubbers use the power of activated carbon.

  • What it does and how it works.

Activated carbon is carbon that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. There are so many of these that one pound of activated carbon has a surface area of 60 to 150 acres
  • The technology used in military gas masks.

Activated carbon is the substance that keeps military personnel safe from poisonous gasses. It is also used for water filtration.
  • Adsorption

Adsorption is the process where certain chemicals are attracted to activated carbon and then bond to it. The millions of pores in the activated carbon provide enormous surface area to trap these chemicals.
  • The bigger the filter, the more activated carbon, the more chemicals it adsorbs and the longer it keeps on working.

An activated carbon filter acts like a sponge. When it is full it can adsorb no more. The more carbon you have the more you can adsorb before changing the filter. Allerair MAC-B™ carbon filters have from 7 to 160 pounds and will last from 9 to 24 months. Most off the shelf air cleaners, air purifiers, have only a few token ounces of activated carbon sprayed on a mesh. It's not enough to have any useful long term effect.
  • Call 1-800-626-0664 for help in choosing the right model AllerAir air purifier, air cleaner, air scrubber Impregnated activated carbon

Manganese Exposure Lawsuit Information

Manganese Exposure Lawsuit Information

Information about Manganese Exposure Lawsuit

Manganese Exposure May Cause Serious Mental and Physical Conditions
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has developed a list of leading work-related diseases and injuries in the United States, and included on that list is high levels of manganese exposure that can produce psychoses and suicidal tendencies, most commonly found in welders. Manganese exposure is especially dangerous because unlike other large outbreaks of neurotoxic disorders, manganese has a subtle and slow effect on the body. Chronic exposure to high levels of manganese can affect the central nervous system and is called manganism. Manganism has been linked to Parkinson's disease, the progressive impairment or deterioration of neurons in the brain area substantia nigra. Due to the similarity of this work hazard to non-occupational diseases, like Parkinson's Disease, manganese-exposure is often unidentified as a workplace disease. Physicians are also not trained to take a complete enough medical history to evaluate if medical disease or illness is present.

Recognizing Occupational Manganese Exposure
Chronic exposure to manganese can cause manganism and has been linked to Parkinson's Disease. Although it is difficult to recognize the dangers of manganese because of the subtle and slow symptoms it produces, it is workers should be aware of signs, especially if in the welding industry. Manganism, like Parkinson's, is a progressive movement disorder that is characterized by slow movement and tremors that can affect one side more than the other. A pattern of slowing motor functions, increased tremor, reduced response to speed, enhanced olfactory sense, possible memory and intellectual deficits, and mood changes can indicate the worker has manganese neurotoxicity present. If you are a welder and have been exposed to welding fumes testing is advised.

Reducing Your Risk of Middle Ear Infections

Reducing Your Risk of Middle Ear Infections

Avoid Exposure to Cigarette Smoke or Smoke from Wood-burning Stoves

Cigarette smoke and smoke from wood-burning stoves irritate the mucous membranes and can make it easier for respiratory infections to travel to the middle ear. Try to quit smoking, but if you are unsuccessful, be sure that your children are not in the same room or car as a smoking adult. Try to avoid using a wood stove to heat your home. If you must use this form of heat, try to keep children away from the smoke.

Yahoo! News - EPA Says 225 Counties Fail Air Standards

Yahoo! News - EPA Says 225 Counties Fail Air Standards

EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt announced the list, which included 18 fewer counties than the agency identified in a preliminary report in June. He emphasized the agency was for the first time specifically regulating for fine particles, or soot, that are 2.5 micrometers in diameter — 1/30th the width of a human hair. Such pollution comes from power plants, car exhaust, diesel-burning trucks, wood-burning stoves and other sources.

EPA considers it potentially the most significant air quality health standard, because soot can penetrate deeply into the lungs.

"This is not a story about the air getting dirtier," Leavitt told a news conference. "It is a story about higher, more stringent standards and healthier air."

About 95 million people live in the 225 counties and the nation's capital. EPA estimates the new standard, once met, will prevent at least 15,000 premature deaths, 95,000 cases of bronchitis and 10,000 hospital admissions for respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Paint Odor - NIEHS Alphabetical Listing of Health Topics

Question: I just painted the walls in my house, but I find the odor very irritating. How long will I be able to smell the paint and will it affect my health?

Answer: Different paint products use different ingredients, so it is difficult to comment on the health effects of paint in general. However, health effects associated with the paint will be significantly diminished as the paint dries. The best thing that you can do is to create conditions inside your home which would encourage a more rapid drying of the paint. | More |

Formaldehyde - American Lung Association site

Formaldehyde - American Lung Association site

WHAT IS IT?

Formaldehyde is an important chemical used widely by industry to manufacture building materials and numerous household products. It is also a by-product of combustion and certain other natural processes. Thus, it may be present in substantial concentrations both indoors and outdoors.

Sources of formaldehyde in the home include building materials, smoking, household products, and the use of unvented, fuel-burning appliances, like gas stoves or kerosene space heaters. Formaldehyde, by itself or in combination with other chemicals, serves a number of purposes in manufactured products. For example, it is used to add permanent-press qualities to clothing and draperies, as a component of glues and adhesives, and as a preservative in some paints and coating products. | More |

Positive Air Pressure, Negative Air Pressure Ducting Options

Positive PressureThe positive air configuration draws in the indoor air by the top of the unit and blows clean air out by the bottom.

The positive air configuration draws in the indoor air by the top of the unit and blows clean air out by the bottom.

This system can be used to bring outdoor air through the air cleaner and create positive air pressure in the interior space.

This pressure forces the contaminated indoor air out and replaces it with cleaned outdoor air.

The positive air configuration is used in the Air Handler central air systems and may be used to feed clean air into a heat exchanger or air duct.

Negative Pressure

The negative air configuration draws the contaminated air in through the bottom of the unit and blows it out through the top. This pressure draws outdoor air into the interior to replace the extracted contaminated air.

This system can be used to move contaminated air from indoors to outdoors through the air cleaner and create negative air pressure in the indoor space.

This pressure draws outdoor air into the interior to replace the extracted contaminated air.

The air cleaner cleans the contaminated indoor air before releasing it outdoors to avoid creating outdoor pollution and to conform with environmental regulations.
