Activated carbon has been specially treated to open up millions of tiny pores and fissures. This creates a huge internal surface area. In fact, less than a handful of carbon has the surface area of an entire football field. When polluted air is drawn into the air purifier, chemicals, gases and odors are trapped in these openings. How to Remove Dust and Breathe Clean Air

Anyone living in a house or apartment or working in an office, knows about the inevitability of dust. No matter how much you clean, in a matter of days or even hours, you will see dust particles dancing in the air with a veil of film collecting on surfaces throughout your home.

As a former afterthought to toxic chemicals in the realm of indoor air contaminants, dust has earned a bad reputation, all in its tiny self, as studies point to inherent dangers of the organic and inorganic particles you are exposed to.

Household dust varies in its composition and can be quite different from one home to the next. It is most often comprised of from particles blowing in through doors and windows as well from dirt and substances brought inside when entering the home. Skin cells, pet dander, fibers from household carpets and fabrics also contribute to the dust count. Then there is food debris, kitchen grease, lint, paint particles, pesticides, decomposing insects and soot. The list could carry on.

The amount of dust is also dependent on the number of people present and their activities. Whenever you are entering a room and doing something, you are likely to shed cells and increase the dust count in that room. That is why dust is worse in rooms that are used most often.

Dust particles are measured by the micron (one micron equals 1/25,400 of an inch). The dust that you can see is about 10 microns in diameter. Those are the big particles. The more dangerous type of dust, the tiny particle that can lodge in your lungs and wreak havoc, is about .3 micron in size. In comparison, a sharp pencil dot is about 200 microns in diameter.

Successful Cleaning to Remove Pet Odors and Stains

Has your pet left "scent marks" of urination and/or defecation on your floor or furniture? To successfully re-train your pet to avoid those areas, follow these basic steps: ¹

• Find all soiled areas using your nose and eyes. A black-light bulb will usually show even old urine stains. Turn out all lights in the room; use the black-light to identify soiled areas and lightly outline the areas with chalk.
• Clean the soiled areas appropriately to remove the odors (see below).
• Make the areas unattractive and/or unavailable (see our handouts on dog and cat aversives).
• Make the appropriate "bathroom" area attractive (see our handouts regarding positive reinforcement, house soiling and/or litter box issues).
• Teach your pet the appropriate place to eliminate by using positive reinforcement.

These steps work as a team! In order for your efforts to be successful, you need to follow all of these steps. If you fail to completely clean the area, your other re-training efforts will be useless. As long as your pet can smell that personal scent, he'll continue to return to the "accident zone." Even if you can't smell traces of urine, your pet can. Your most important chore is to remove (neutralize) that odor.

How the Allerair air purifier, air cleaner and air scrubber High Efficiency air cleaning system works.

Allerair air cleaners / purifiers / scrubbers use a 4 phase filtering system. In the order that the air passes through them they are: the pre-filter, the mass activated carbon bed (MAC-B™) filter, the 2 anti-microbial filters and the HEPA filter.

• The pre-filter traps larger dust particles and is easily removed and cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. It acts to stop the larger particles such as dust and lint from clogging the other filters.
• The mass activated carbon bed (MAC-B™) filter adsorbs gases and odors. (Adsorb: the process by which activated carbon captures gases and odors.) Most off the shelf air cleaner, air purifier products have a few token ounces of carbon sprayed on the pre-filter. This is not sufficient to capture more than a small amount of the noxious gases and odors (formaldehyde, fluorine gas, nail salon chemical fumes, odors, HCL, fragrances, etc.) in the air and for only a short period of time. What are Dust Mites?

Dust mites are tiny insects that are invisible to the naked eye. Every home has dust mites. They feed on human skin flakes and are found in mattresses, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture, bedcovers, clothes, stuffed toys and fabric and fabric-covered items. Body parts and feces from dust mites can trigger asthma in individuals with allergic reactions to dust mites, and exposure to dust mites can cause asthma in children who have not previously exhibited asthma symptoms.

Actions You Can Take

• Cover mattresses and pillows with dust proof ("allergen-impermeable") zippered covers.
• Wash bedding (sheets, blankets and bedcovers) once per week in hot water.
• Choose washable stuffed toys, wash them often in hot water and dry them thoroughly.
• Keep stuffed toys off beds.
• Maintain low indoor humidity, ideally between 30-50% relative humidity. Humidity levels can be measured by hygrometers which are available at local hardware stores.

Common house dust may contain asthma triggers. When you are treating your house for dust mites, try these simple steps as well.

• Remove dust often with a damp cloth.
• Vacuum carpet and fabric-covered furniture to reduce dust build-up.

About "Activated" Carbon

Carbon that is 'activated' undergoes a process that opens up millions of tiny pores and fissures to enhance the material's adsorbent properties. The process creates a very large internal surface area, which is key to the power of activated carbon - the more surface area - the more the carbon can adsorb. Only one pound of activated carbon typically has a surface area of 125 acres. Activated carbon is so effective that it's used in military gas masks.

About HEPA Filters

HEPA stands for high efficiency particulate air filter and describes a filter that can remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns in diameter. Particles of this size are used to evaluate the performance of a filter because they are among the most difficult to remove. However, particles that are larger or smaller than 0.3 microns can be filtered with even greater efficiency due to the nature of the filter’s design. True HEPA filters are composed of a dense web of fibers designed to trap particles. This type of filter was first used in the 1940’s to trap radioactive contaminants in the air and protect scientists who were developing the first nuclear weapons. Today, HEPA is considered the safest and most efficient method to treat airborne particles.

Tobacco smoke poses a unique indoor air quality concern. Not only does

tobacco contain chemicals, odors, and smoke particles; those particles contain tar which block up conventional particle filters in air purifiers. An air purifier for tobacco smoke must be able to combat all of these concerns without having the tar quickly ruin the filters. 

The Tar-Trapping filter, a specially coated filter that removes tar before it can damage the other filters.

Nature Of Tobacco Smoke

• Tobacco smoke consists of nicotine, tars, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and a substantial number of chemicals and many other irritants. Tars adhere to walls, furniture, carpets, clothing and other articles having large surfaces. After most of the vapor and smoke in the air has been removed by the impregnated carbon media, the walls and other surfaces may retain a film of liquid tar, much of which slowly evaporates back into the air.

• Allerair D/S and DX/S series with the double activated carbon media together with a matching smoke specific pre-filter (Tar pre-filter), does not hide or mask the odors, chemicals and gases as some other systems do. Allerair and Electrocorp units do not use Ozone, which itself has been labeled a pollutant. According to the American Lung Association and Health Canada, it is dangerous to one's health when you breathe in additional ozone.

How Smoke Odor is Removed

• When first turned on in an already smoke-filled room, the first effect is the removal of the sharp irritants that affect the eyes and the nose. If an  impregnated media filtering unit is already running when smoke starts, the smoke and the vapor is eliminated and an odor free condition can be obtained after smoking stops. This always depends on a variety of factors: sufficient carbon modules, strategic placement, appropriate matching filters, adequate maintenance and operating modules 24 hours a day.
• The elimination of the less acrid tar and chemical odor, and the reduction of the visible mist of liquid tar require little time in most settings. The removal of the remaining odor, which comes from tar and chemical re-emissions from walls, carpets, draperies and furniture, may take several hours to many days, depending on smoking volumes.
